I continue to appreciate Carmen’s clear, candid, surprisingly comprehensive, and remarkably restrained daily briefing.
Joining you in prayer for commissioners to reject apostate committee recommendations in plenary, a friend’s rhetorical questions come to mind: “Why are you surprised by what’s going wrong at GA? Don’t you remember it was self-serving narcissistic civil and ecclesiastical bureaucrats who coupled then conspired to crucify Jesus?”
Well, Committee #10 concluded their report a couple of hours ago now. Followed by the report from the Social Justice Committee. I do not recognized this church anymore; not even a little bit. The church is forever changed. And yet, NO ONE is commenting upon what just happened. Not the Laymen, the Presbyterian News Service or the Fellowship of Presbyterians. It is sooooo quiet. Could it be shock? For one who has seen this coming for many, many years, now that it is here, I too feel saddened, silenced, and deeply grieve the secularization and socialization of the church I once loved and, as a Teaching Elder of 30 years, felt such a part. Where do I fit?
Some are giving thanks for the opportunity to fully serve all our members. Of course peace is always our prayer. I am witness to the mending of broken hearts by the action of the General Assembly today.
Excellent wrapup, Carmen!
I guess it happpened this way: Carmen slipped a note to the moderator requesting a dispensation for her video report from the General Assembly (“assembly” = “church” in Hebrew). Understanding Carmen’s concern about violating 1 Cor. 14:35: “for it is a shame for women to speak in the church,” the moderator suggested she set up her recording apparatus somewhere other than hall D, which the Presbyterians had appropriated for their church, “How about the locker room of the Pistons?” suggested the moderator. “Your biting criticisms are inappropriate for our holy assembly.” Thus we got Carmen’s voice from the “church” (Cobo Arena) expressing her concerns about the degradation of the Presbyterian investments through BDS. John 4:28: “The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men.” Carmen left her communion with the Lord, came into the city (Detroit: Cobo Center beyond Hall D) and told the men (and women and children) of the Lay Committee – what was going on.
