The Presbyterian Left’s
Great Witch Hunt

book
Introduction
By Parker T. Williamson

Strong words. Those who contend for the faith against its cultured despisers understand the necessity of strong words. In matters of moment – and, surely, confessing the gospel in our time qualifies as such – what other words would suffice?

Strong words in A Moment to Decide are not its problem. The truth is. The tactic of arguing that an opponent is wrong simply because his daddy is a drunkard, or a friend of a drunkard, or a friend of a friend of a drunkard, is as ancient as Aristophanes. Truth has been bloodied, but never bested, by ad hominem assault.

Like the proverbial Don Quixote, left-wing Presbyterians pursue a romantic vision of “peace,” “justice” and “diversity” by flailing at creatures of their own imagination. Historically, the tactic never has been successful, but failure has not deterred Lewis D. Daly and Robert Bohl from repeating it.

When I first read A Moment to Decide, I had difficulty taking it seriously. I decided to ignore it, lest the attention generated by our critique bolster its sales. But heavy promotions by the Presbyterian Publishing Corporation – including a book-signing event for the Rev. Bohl at the 2000 General Assembly – touted the work. I even found colleagues sneaking purchased copies out of the bookstore, enshrouded in plain brown wrappers!

Nevertheless, it seemed inappropriate for a target in the book to weigh in against it. Better to leave that task to others who have no pecuniary interest in my work, and whose academic expertise might warrant a competent critique. That such people have come to the fore is a matter of no small consequence to me and my family.

My hope is that those who read A Moment to Decide will see it for what it is – a project by former leaders with failed vision who seek to revive their cause by smearing the reputations of their critics.
