![]() Death Wish A Commentary By Parker T. Williamson The Layman Online Friday, May 30, 2003
The Presbyterian Church (USA) has earned the dubious distinction of being the only oldline denomination to endorse partial birth abortion. One would have hoped that after the United States Senate voted to ban this practice Presbyterian leaders (adept as they are at accommodating to culture) might revisit their own moral turpitude. But tonight's General Assembly has chosen otherwise. Notwithstanding the fact that Washington politicians have proven themselves more moral than Presbyterian bureaucrats, this General Assembly has dug in its heels. A doctor can bash in the skull of a viable infant, suck out its brains, and rest easy in an absolution that has been granted by the Presbyterian Curia. Somehow, they have managed to excise Jesus' own words: "See that you do not look down on one of these little ones, for I say to you that in heaven their angels always see the face of my Father who is in heaven." (Matthew 18:10) Infanticide has besmirched other moments in history. What distinguishes the present moment is this: A practice that centuries of Christians have universally condemned has been blessed by Presbyterians. May God have mercy on the Presbyterian Church (USA). |
