DENVER The 215th General Assembly will be asked to call
for "an end to the U.S. embargo against Cuba and the restoration of
normal diplomatic relations between the two countries."
The General Assembly Committee on Global Ministries, with minor
revisions, approved an overture (03-24) from the Presbytery of Santa Fe
that, essentially, launches a voluntary lobbying campaign of national
legislators. The overture asks commissioners to:
- Commend legislators in Congress who have supported measures
easing the "terms of trade for food and medical materials,
removing travel restrictions, and removing limits on remittances
from Cuban Americans to their relatives in Cuba."
- Urge the agencies, governing bodies, and members of the
Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) to "continue to advocate and
support such measures when they are introduced into Congress."
- Urge the agencies, governing bodies, and members of the
Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) to encourage legislators, "as they
consider measures related to remittances, to include authority for
churches in the United States to meet in full their contractual
obligations to their Cuban pensioners."
- Request that the Washington Office encourage legislators to
include in legislation related to remittances authority for churches
in the U.S. to meet in full their contractual obligations to Cuban
pensioners.
