DENVER – The budget of the Presbyterian Church (USA) is shrinking – by more than $14 million since 2001 – but the cost per Presbyterian is going up.

The 215th General Assembly has authorized what's known as a per-capita allocation of $5.51 per church member for the 2004 budget year. The 2003 per capita was $5.43.

The per capita pays for administrative and some program costs of the General Assembly Council and the Office of the General Assembly. The bulk of the program costs come from income produced from contributions by Presbyterians, most of them deceased, to the Presbyterian Foundation, and special offerings, such as "One Great Hour of Sharing."

The full mission budget, including per capita, is about $126 million. It once was as high as $144 million.
