Nearly 11 percent of the employees of the Presbyterian Church (USA) and its affiliated publishing, investment, and pension arms had pay and benefit packages totaling more than $100,000 each during 2003, according to the Minutes of the 215th General Assembly.

Seventy-eight employees were in the $100,000-plus pay level, with the largest number working for the Board of Pensions and the Presbyterian Foundation.

Twenty-eight of the 128 Board of Pensions employees – 21.9 percent – had pay-benefit packages worth more than $100,000. Nineteen of the 81 employees – 23.5 percent – of the Presbyterian Foundation were at that level.

Of the denomination's 465 employees who work in the Louisville headquarters to manage, implement and support the mission of the church, 26 employees – 5.6 percent – were in the $100,000-plus category. Only the Office of the General Assembly, which is under Stated Clerk Clifton Kirkpatrick, had a double-digit percentage of $100,000-plus employees: six of 50 (12 percent). Kirkpatrick's package was $150,688.

The top denominational salary package was $403,688 for Robert Maggs Jr., the president of the Board of Pensions, a $6-billion operation that manages health-care and pension premiums and benefits. Two other employees of the Board had pay-benefit packages of more than $300,000 and four were above $200,000.

The highest paid employee on the denominational ministry staff was John Detterick, the executive director of the General Assembly Council, whose package was worth $207,146.
