LOUISVILLE – The General Assembly Council approved the formation of a task force to consider how to use a $9.12 million bequest to the Presbyterian Church (USA).

The bequest, from the Heiserman Estate in Yuma, Colo., totaled $9.6 million. The Presbyterian Foundation received 5 percent of the gift for administrative fees.

Lemont Heiserman was a prominent landowner and farmer in Colorado.

The Foundation also recommended that the council give 10 percent ($900,000) of the funds to the Heiserman's home church, Yuma Presbyterian Church, to be held by the presbytery as an endowment for the church.

The council decided in May to use $2.5 million to support existing mission personnel in 2007-2008. According to the Presbyterian News Service, those funds were "used to spare 15 missionaries from being laid off in the May 1 GAC budget cuts."

If the council agrees to the 10 percent gift to the Yuma church, that would leave approximately $5.7 million for the GAC.

The task force will:
  • Consider terms by which 10 percent of the amount received by the GAC be gifted for use in the mission of the Yuma, Colo., church and presbytery
  • Recommend the use of the remainder, which may be for designated or undesignated purposes of the GAC
  • Report to the GAC in March 2007
Most of the funds are expected to be received in 2007, but due to the sale of real estate the final proceeds may be received in 2008.
