LOUISVILLE, Ky. – In an attempt "to maintain a high level of connection with the Montreat Camp and Conference Center," the General Assembly Council will nominate four members to the center's board of directors.

The action came Wednesday during a morning meeting of the GAC executive committee at the Brown Hotel.

The board members nominated by the GAC will need to be approved by the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA) and elected by the Mountain Retreat Association Inc.'s board of directors.

Linda Valentine, executive director of the General Assembly Council, told the executive committee that, "when the GAC went through a change in numbers in all directions, some members of the Montreat board were concerned with the lack of connection" between the national church and the organization. "This recommendation enables us to maintain the connection," she said.

The recommendation, according to a document prepared for the executive committee, was the result of "several conversations" among the GAC chair, GAC chair-elect, GAC Nominating Committee chair, GAC executive director, and the Mountain Retreat Association, Inc.'s board of directors.

The conversations, according to the document, "determined that it is mutually beneficial for the board and for GAC to maintain a high level of connection with the Montreat Camp and Conference Center."

The recommendation calls on the GAC to:
  • Nominate four members, at least one of whom will be a current voting GAC member, to the Mountain Retreat Association, Inc.'s board of directors for a three-year term, eligible for one additional term.
  • That the Procedures Subcommittee make the appropriate change to Appendix 1 of the GAC Manual of Operations.
The terms will begin on Nov. 1 of the year elected and end on Oct. 31 of the third year, according to the document. Two members will be nominated for the class of 2011, and two additional members will be nominated in September 2009 for the class of 2012.
