College women's network provided links to pornographic material

The National Network of Presbyterian College Women (NNPCW) has operated a Internet home page with resources and links that promote homosexuality, pornographic material and "re-imagining God," contrary to theological positions adopted by the Presbyterian Church (USA).

Because of its printed material, NNPCW was in the center of controversy during the meeting of the 210th General Assembly in Charlotte. Commissioners voted to end sponsorship and funding for the organization, but later changed their minds following a demonstration led by NNPCW participants and pro-gay-ordination activists. The commissioners then voted to continue funding for one year and to have a special committee investigate the organization's resources and programming. NNPCW's material on the Internet was not discussed during by the 210th General Assembly. After the General Assembly, The Presbyterian Layman examined the NNPCW site, which is hosted by the Presbyterian Church (USA), and found troubling material including suggested links to web sites that were linked to pornography,.

The NNPCW site and resources links were available to Internet users until July 1. They were removed without explanation from the PCUSA server on July 2.

Parker T. Williamson, executive editor of The Presbyterian Layman, notified the Rev. Cathy Chisholm, General Assembly Council chair, by certified mail July 8 and sent evidence of the NNPCW's site contents to General Assembly Vice-Moderator James Mead, who made the motion to establish the special committee to investigate NNPCW.

Williamson's letter to the evaluation committee and a summary of the documentation.
