Response to NNPCW Task Force Report

The Layman Online
Monday, February 15, 1999

In response to the recommendation of a General Assembly appointed task force that the National Network of Presbyterian College Women be awarded ongoing funding and staff support, the Presbyterian Renewal Leaders Network has issued the following statement.

We, the undersigned leaders from 13 Presbyterian organizations attending a meeting of the Presbyterian Renewal Leaders Network, February 12, 1999, in Louisville, Kentucky, have read the report of the Task Force to Evaluate the Resources, Publications, and Program of the National Network of Presbyterian College Women (NNPCW).

We share the essence of the task force's desire for women's ministry in higher education that provides an opportunity for questioning, discussing, and exploring issues and concerns of university/college women "within a Christian context" (page 9, recommendation 1).

We note the findings of the task force, confirming charges made in Commissioners' Resolution 98-10, that the NNPCW program and resources in significant instances failed to provide that Christian context.

1. "failed to make clear representation of Jesus Christ in the issues and concerns of university/college women" (page 9, paragraph 3).

2. "there is a failure in this foundational section to even mention Jesus Christ, or to explicitly state that having a saving relationship with Jesus is important" (page 6, paragraph 2).

3. "the resource material, Young Women Speak, failed to conform to the biblical and confessional standards of the PCUSA" (page 9, paragraph 5).

4. "Other materials generated for this resource, clearly violated the policies of the PCUSA, being inconsistent with the church's confessional standards, lacking in Biblical and theological foundation, and failing to provide balanced, accurate resources for study or further discussion" (page 6, paragraph 5).

Therefore, given NNPCW's 8-year pattern of programs, resources, newsletters, and annual conferences that have not been consistent with the biblical and confessional standards of the PCUSA, we recommend that the 211th General Assembly provide only such funding as is necessary to prepare a syllabus and draft materials for the envisioned university/college women's ministry. Further, we recommend that these materials be presented to and approved by the General Assembly prior to any addition of staff, program implementation or funding by the PCUSA.
