November 18 deadline set for speakers at NNPCW hearings By Alexa Smith Presbyterian News Service Monday, November 9, 1998 LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Individuals and groups intending to speak during January hearings to review the denomination's National Network of Presbyterian College Women (NNPCW) need to register to do so between Nov. 11-18. Hearings on the network will be under way during the afternoon of Jan. 11, the first day of the next meeting of the General Assembly's Work Group to Review the NNPCW, according to a statement just released by the work group. The docket will be developed on the basis of written requests only. Requests to speak must be postmarked or faxed between the dates of Nov. 11-18. All requests should be sent to the Office of the Executive Director, attention: Neva Newlin. The mailing address is 100 Witherspoon St., Room 5407-A, Louisville, Ky. 40202-1396, and the fax is 502-569-8080. The review is the outcome of a dispute that erupted during the 210th General Assembly in Charlotte when critics of the NNPCW charges that some of the group's resources violate provisions of the denomination's Book of Order. A publication entitled, "Young Women Speak: Issues for Study by College Women," was singled out in particular, since critics charged that it portrays homosexuality as an appropriate Christian lifestyle, a position that runs counter to the denominational policy. The Assembly withdrew funding and official sponsorship of the NNPCW, but after a demonstration by it's backers, restored it for one more year while the work group reviews "the resources, publications and programs" of the group. The work group is due to report at the next General Assembly and to make recommendations about future funding of the network. Hearings set for January 11 Hearings will open at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 11, with presentations by the two groups most vocally opposed to the NNPCW. Voices of Orthodox Women will speak from 1-1:30 p.m., followed by a 1:30-2 p.m. presentation by the Presbyterian Lay Committee. The review group will ask questions from 2-2:30 p.m. Groups supporting the NNPCW's work will give testimony from 2:30-3:30 p.m., including the NNPCW Coordinating Committee and Justice for Women, followed by questions from the review group. Individual testimonies will be delivered from 4:30-6 p.m., with five-minute time slots. Slots will docketed based on the date of the receipt of the written request. |
