The Chicago White Sox are winning big this year, and by Sox standards it's a miraculous baseball season. But manager Jerry Manuel doesn't think that is because God is on their side. "I think that would put God in a box, and He's not for that," Manuel told the Chicago Tribune. "He is bigger than the game."

Manuel, an evangelical Christian, makes no secret about his beliefs, but doesn't push them on anybody. He spends time each day reading Oswald Chambers' classic devotional My Utmost For His Highest. Players and fans see the principles of his faith showing through in his leadership and moral authority on the field. The team is in first place in the Central division of the American League.

Manuel's role is sometimes a balancing act, according to the Tribune. When a pitcher throws a beanball at a White Sox batter, Manuel may be tempted to react one way, but must set a better example. "You wrestle all the time because you're trying to witness in your lifestyle," he said. "Anyone can talk and preach, but if you can walk it and be a witness, it's a better testimony than people saying one thing and doing something else."
