| In response to The Layman
Online's story on the "National Coming Out Day Service"
held Oct. 9 in the chapel of Columbia Theological Seminary,
PresbyWorld
(which includes "satire, news and ministry inside the Presbyterian
Church USA") has posted a story, entitled "Columbia Seminary
Celebrates Coming Out Day." The story reads: |
||
| The Layman reports that a student
at Columbia Theological Seminary in Atlanta, GA organized a "Coming
Out" day as a chapel service. Students arrived at chapel to
discover without warning that the communion service was to celebrate
homosexuality. Click here. The faculty seems to have suggested that they
are not responsible for the content of the services, that as an
ecumenical seminary people from many faith traditions are invited to
share their views in chapel. If that is indeed the case, PresbyWorld would like to invite our brothers and sisters at Columbia to offer a service of mourning for aborted fetuses (in chapel, without warning, of course). Likewise, our Roman Catholic friends could hold a meaningful service discussing the possibility that God doesn't intend for women to be ordained. And to be fair, we would also like to propose a litany of healing for those afflicted with homosexual desires. Hey! Maybe Rush Limbaugh could preach and Newt could serve communion! Oh, but then I guess it wouldn't be sensitive to impose those views on others in that context. |

Columbia
Seminary's website includes this thank you on its "This Week"
page which lists weekly events: |

| A WORD OF THANKS: I would like to extend a word of thanks to those who helped bring together the national coming out day celebrations at Columbia. It was a day that many were truly able to celebrate and "come out" for justice and love. I would also like to thank all of you who provided a financial contribution toward the Human Rights Campaign Toy Drive for children. Members of the seminary community raised approximately $425, which appears to be the largest dollar amount raised at any of the locations throughout the Greater Atlanta Area. To all who participated, thank you again for bringing a touch of grace to this place and extending that grace to children who have already receive the toys. Karla Fleshman. | ||
