SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – The General Assembly Council was assured that money would be found to carry out the General Assembly's budget for the National Network of Presbyterian College Women, notwithstanding a National Ministries Division report that said there was not enough money to do the job.

The General Assembly approved a $96,500 annual budget for the Network, including $50,500 for a staff associate. Resource development totals $14,300 and family/vocations curriculum totals $6,700.

Where's the money?
Thomas E. Fisher questioned the report by the National Ministries Division, "Why is there no money available to carry out what the General Assembly mandated?"

National Ministries Division director Curtis A. Kearns Jr. said the key phrase was "no new money," adding that the staff associate position was a new position.

What effect will the absence of money have on the program, asked Fisher.

Kearns said "no effect. The money has been allocated for the position of associate and that position should be staffed."

"So the money is available then?" said Fisher.

Women's Ministry Program Area associate director Barbara Dua was asked to the microphone to clarify the situation.

"The General Assembly review committee made recommendations with budget implications for NNPCW – including a staff person and various resources to be produced," she said. Dua said she has been informed that there is no new money. By eliminating a part-time position in the California office, Dua said the money is now available to hire the staff associate but the program does "not have money for all the resources that would be requested."

"When the General Assembly votes an action," said Kearns, "it implies there must be give and take in the program. … We will do as GA mandated. That means there will be sacrifice somewhere in the budget."

For clarification, Fisher asked, "It is going to be supported and continued. Is that right?"

He was answered by a resounding "Yes."
