The 201st General Assembly, meeting in Philadelphia, kept one eye on business and the other on China to monitor the repression of the freedom movement in Tianamen Square. Commissioners expressed their "outrage at the actions of a government that has so clearly destroyed its moral legitimacy."

The Rev. Joan SalmonCampbell became the first clergywoman to be elected moderator of the PCUSA. She implored the denomination to "cease commiserating about the loss of our members." The year loss through Dec. 31, 1988 was 38,107.

The Hymnbook Committee released a tentative final list of 640 hymns, to be reduced to 600 in the new hymnal. Among the ousted were "Faith of Our Fathers," "Good Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" and "Nearer My God to Thee."
