The 203rd General Assembly voted 94.4 percent against a four-year-old study that proposed a radical sexual ethic that would have legitimized extramarital and homosexual relationships. Meeting in Baltimore, the commissioners "strongly affirmed the sanctity of the marital covenant between one man and one woman as a God-given relationship to be lived out in Christian fidelity."

The report by the General Assembly's Task Force on Human Sexuality was titled "Keeping Body and Soul Together."

Its rejection by the General Assembly brought into prominence lobbying tactics by homosexual activists, including an "Act Up" demonstration during the sermon by moderator, Herbert D. Valentine.
