206th General Assembly, 1994 By John H. Adams The Layman Online Friday, June 11, 1999 The 206th General Assembly quickly moved to quell criticism over PCUSA involvement in the controversial "ReImagining" movement. The criticism occurred after The Layman reported that the PCUSA was one of the chief financial supporters of the "ReImagining Conference" and that several women in denominational leadership were key participants. GA commissioners, meeting in Wichita, approved a report that said, "We reject teachings that deny the tenets of our faith. Let there be no doubt that theology matters, that our Reformed tradition is precious to us ..." Commissioners also directed that the report be mailed to every PCUSA congregation. The report came in response to 51 overtures deploring PCUSA involvement in the ReImagining Conference.
Membership loss for the year was reported at 38,214. |
