was elected moderator
The 208th General Assembly, meeting in Albuquerque, sent to the presbyteries a proposed constitutional amendment that would require Presbyterian deacons, elders and ministers "to live either in fidelity within the covenant of a marriage of a man and a woman ... or chastity in singleness." The proposal became known as Amendment B.

The commissioners, rejecting the recommendation of the General Assembly Council, declined to re-elect GAC Executive Director James Brown.

The Rev. John M. Buchanan, pastor of Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago, was elected moderator. Commissioners also elected a new stated clerk, the Rev. Clifton Kirkpatrick. The Rev. James Andrews had served as stated clerk of the PCUSA since 1984.

The membership loss for the year ending Dec. 31, 1995, was 32,928.
