Inclusive language mandate defeated By Robert P. Mills The Layman Online Friday, June 25, 1999 FORT WORTH - With little debate, and by a margin of more than 3-1, the Fort Worth General Assembly rejected an overture from Western New York Presbytery that would required PCUSA ministers and members to use inclusive God-language in worship services. The vote followed the recommendation of the Assembly Committee on Theological Issues and Institutions, which urged that the overture been approved. Had the overture been adopted by the Assembly and approved by a majority of the presbyteries, it could have led to judicial proceedings against pastors and worship leaders who failed to use non-biblical names when speaking or referring to God. |
