Mistakes were made in planning Unity in Diversity conference By Paula R. Kincaid The Layman Online Wednesday, June 23, 1999 FORT WORTH James Mead, vice-moderator of the 210th General Assembly, reported on the Unity in Diversity conference held in Atlanta, Ga., April 29-May1. Only 288 people many of whom were underwritten by denominational agencies participated in this General Assembly-sponsored, nationally advertised conference. Mead noted in his report that evangelicals and women of the denomination did not attend. He blamed the absence of evangelicals and women on two mistakes made by the conference's planning committee. "We didn't plan to address women's issues and we did not recruit a nationally known evangelical leader to speak," said Mead. Participants talked about "important issues that divide us," said Mead, adding that participants "spoke with greater love and respect for the church." |
