God Is No Illusion: Meditations on the End of Life

by John Tully Carmody
(Valley Forge: Trinity, 1997, 127 pp., $14)

Reviewed by Robert P. Mills

Carmody’s 15 letters and 75 psalms cover the three years between his diagnosis with and death from multiple myeloma. The letters are painfully eloquent in their simplicity. The psalms remind us that “Nothing earthly, not even one’s pain or dying, is more ultimate than God.” The book, writes his wife Denise, “should not be read; it should be prayed.” (RPM)
