The Fire within the Eye: A Historical Essay on the Nature and Meaning of Light

by David Park
Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1997, 337 pp., $29.95)

Reviewed by Robert P. Mills

Light has been the topic of studies by pre-Socratic Greek philosophers, early and medieval Christian theologians, and contemporary theoretical physicists. In this wide-ranging essay, Park learnedly surveys the vast range of human speculation and research about light, vision, and optics. While not writing from a Christian perspective, Park’s reflections on the spiritual significance attributed to light, especially when coupled with our still-developing understanding of its nature, offer wonderful opportunities for Christian meditations on the One who said in the beginning “Let there be light.” (RPM)
