ST. LOUIS – A retired U.S. senator and a former Major League baseball player will be among the speakers at the 1999 Presbyterian Men’s Conference in St. Louis April 9-11.

Former Sen. Paul Simon, an Illinois Democrat, will be the keynote speaker. Ricky Horton, who was a member of the 1988 World Champion Los Angeles Dodgers, will give his testimony.

The worship services for the conference will be led by the Rev. William Gillespie, pastor of Cote Brilliante Presbyterian Church in St. Louis.

The conference will include a number of workshops: Inner-City Mission, Neighborhood Associations, Ecumenism for Men, How to Form Small Groups, Leadership Training for Men, General Assembly News, Bible Study, Table Topics for Men, Ethnic Harmony, and Mentoring Boys through Scouting.

Simon retired from the U.S. Senate in January 1997 and founded the Public Policy Institute to find “new ways of solving some very old problems.” A journalist, Simons has written a column titled “P.S./Washington” for 45 years.

Horton, who pitched for the Dodgers, St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago White Sox, is area director for the Greater St. Louis Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

The advance registration deadline for the conference is March 26.
