“Theology matters” has become quite the catch-phrase among modern Presbyterians, a chirpy affirmation of a notion once taken quite seriously – that the study of God is undertaken to shape what we believe and how we live.

This volume is a work of quite serious theology in which Presbyterians are well represented. While some contributors would fall outside the customary range of the term “evangelical,” many would wear the label with pride. Particularly noteworthy contributions include Thomas Torrance on “The Substance of Faith,” John Leith on “Calvin’s Theological Realism,” and Leanne Van Dyk on “Reformed Doctrines the Atonement.”

A modest proposal: Any Presbyterian who utters the phrase “theology matters” in the year 2000 should thereby agree to read each of the 31 essays in this outstanding collection.
