At press time for The Layman, the vote on Amendment A was 15-2 against removing Biblical standards for the ordination of church officers from the Book of Order of the Presbyterian Church (USA).

By early next year, 174 presbyteries in the United States and Puerto Rico will have voted on the proposal. A simple majority will determine the outcome.

Rogers’ presbytery: No
San Gabriel Presbytery in California was among those voting against A by an overwhelming margin – 181-97.

It was San Gabriel Presbytery that endorsed, by a two-vote margin, Jack Rogers for moderator of the 2001 General Assembly.

In 1997, presbyteries voted with a 56.7 percent margin to include the “fidelity/chastity” clause in the constitution. In 1998, nearly two-thirds of the presbyteries voted against removal of that clause.

  • Presbyteries will also vote on other amendments, including one that would allow the use of the term “bishop” for local congregations.
