The featured speakers for the April 1 event will be Maggie Gallagher, president of the Institute for Marriage and Public Policy, and Robert George, one of the original drafters of the Manhattan Declaration. Their topic will be “Marriage: Why It Can and Must Be Saved – The Case Against Same Sex Marriage.” SES President and host of nationally-syndicated radio talk show “SoundRezn” Alex McFarland said he anticipates the 2010 installment of the series to be the most significant yet.
“We believe that the concepts of absolute truth and objective morality are under attack in our culture,” he said. “Traditional values are mocked in popular culture, powerful media voices undermine the ethical fiber that in previous generations had made America strong, and even youth raised in Christians homes are often unprepared to stand up for their faith. The Veritas lectures are intended to inform, inspire, mobilize, and dispatch leaders of many backgrounds who will stand up for the values that – under God – will help restore our culture.”
Admission for the lecture is $12 for the general public, and $5 for area seminary and college students. Tickets may be purchased online at www.ses.edu, or by calling the seminary, at: 1-800-77TRUTH. The Presbyterian Lay Committee has 10 complimentary tickets available for our readers who want to attend. They are available on a first come, first served basis. Call the PLC office at 1-800-368-0110.
The Veritas Lecture Series began in 2006 with a goal of bringing national opinion makers before the seminary’s student body, McFarland said. Past speakers have included best-selling authors such as Dinesh D’souza and political speakers such as Ann Coulter.
McFarland describes George and Gallagher as two of today’s most influential defenders of marriage.
Gallagher is a nationally-syndicated columnist, the author of three books on marriage and a leading voice of the marriage movement. National Journal named her to the 2004 list of the most influential people in the same-sex marriage debate. She appears frequently on TV and radio, and is frequently asked to lecture at colleges, universities and law schools. She has testified as an expert witness on marriage before the U.S. Senate and in various state legislatures.
George is McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence and Founder and Director of the James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions at Princeton University. His most recent work includes the Manhattan Declaration, which has been signed by more than 350,000 people. It calls Christians everywhere to unite in defense of life, marriage and religious liberty.
