prayer request from missionary friend Larry Brown (currently on furlough in the U.S.):
Please pray for Malawi, home to me and my son. It seems there is a national civil service strike, teachers have joined in, and the international airport in Lilongwe is closed, leaving people I know stranded. I received a message from the U.S. Embassy there, warning of demonstrations that may turn violent.
In May 2012, the Malawi kwacha (their currency) was devalued, leading to egregious inflation. The civil service is demanding a 67% pay raise, and the government says they don’t have the money. I’m sure that’s true. So the government, schools and other essential services are currently paralyzed.
In addition, hospitals are affected by the inflation and are unable to procure essential drugs. I just read in Malawi news online that there is 95% shortage of drugs and medicines.
It has now been exactly 20 years since I first arrived in Malawi. I have never known it to be a violent place (except briefly in 2011 -12) but it sounds like conditions are deteriorating. Carey and I plan to return to Malawi in June.
[Later] This from Steve Potani, one of the graduates of the African Bible College in Lilongwe, Malawi:
As I am writing I am just getting out of the meeting held by the Civil Service Trade Union whereby they were addressing us to go on with the strike. He pointed out on the big gaps that are there on the salaries within the civil service. So all we want as civil servants is a harmonizing increament of salaries. At the meantime all government offices are closed including the airports. No work in the hospitals so all the patients are at risk especially the poor Malawians who depend on the government unpaid hospitals. No salaries for February. Lucky to people like whose parents (the Wilsons)are out in the USA because they will not suffer alot. Life costs have doubled even trippled the normal costs. My landlord has just given me a letter yesterday on the rent fee hike too. Electricity and water have doubled as well. Prices of commodities are changing everyday. Fuel prices are floating too. Life is completely unbearable in Malawi.
Please pray for our marriage. Pray that we never separate or divorce. Pray that we speak kind words to each other. Pray that this does not affect our son.
God Bless,
Rose
