Our friend and Presbyterian pastor Jeff Gissing wrote a concise blog post titled, “The 5 Marks of an Elder.”
Here is his list in brief, but read the entire piece HERE.
1. Elders watch over the people as a shepherd watches over his sheep.
2. Elders lead by example.
3. Elders must lead the congregation away from error and into truth.
4. Some elders will teach.
5. Eldership is a heavy responsibility and it demands mature faith and character.

One of the joys of my life is when the congregation of my church “called” me to serve as a ruling elder. I did not feel that I was qualified to serve but God and the congregation thought otherwise. From my first day in office, I put my faith and trust in the Lord. Through prayer and Bible study, I asked God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit to help me. I was glad to serve as an Elder. This experience helped me to grow in my faith.
