CLAYTON – The St. Louis County Board of Equalization rejected on Tuesday a request by an upscale retirement community that it be exempted from paying property taxes to support the city of Kirkwood, its schools and other services.
Kirkwood city and school officials expect Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America, the parent corporation of the Aberdeen Heights senior citizen campus, to appeal the board’s decision to the State Tax Commission or through the courts.
“I’m sure they’ll appeal,” said Kirkwood School Board President E.J. Miller. “But we’re in a much better position now than when the process began.”
A Presbyterian Manors representative could not be reached for comment Tuesday evening.
A lawyer representing Aberdeen Heights asked the equalization board on April 17 to waive the retirement community’s $1.2 million annual tax bill. The annual revenue losses for the Kirkwood schools could total $700,000.
